The Center For Fiction, 47th Street, Manhattan, is a treasure in NYC, and even the North East of the US.
It is housed in an old building called and etched on its front, The Mercantile Library of New York.
It is just west of Madison, not too far off from the area of many delightful Japan owned noodle shops and Yakitori venues, and sushi places. Buy a book, and head to one to take some food, and paw through the books, and literature freshly purchased from the nice selection at The Center for Fiction.
“Best NYC literary institution you may not have heard of: The Center for Fiction in midtown Manhattan is a private library founded in 1820 as the Mercantile"- New York Women in Communications, Inc.
